Subject: Excellent Resource for 17th century Scots
Subject: Excellent Resource for 17th century Scots
This is a great resource for Scots, and also for those researching banished Covenanters who are found in David Dobson's books of emigrants. Some of the people on these pages were killed by soldiers. It will be noted that the episcopalian ministers reported few of those in their parish as withdrawing from required church attendance. (These ministers had been assigned to replace the presbyterian pastors who had been "outed" or removed from their church.) My family's oral tradition was that our McHaffie ancestor was banished to America, and that a priest tried to help him to escape. This has proven true. Mr. James Chrystie, minister, did not report John Mahaffie, Gargary, in Oct 1684, as can be seen in this book. The index alone is very helpful, and has many unusual names, variations.
